The Secret of the Kelpie

OUT NOW
“Every loch in Scotland, however beautiful, has its dark cold depths. And every loch in Scotland has its kelpie. But it’s easy to forget those dangers on a sunny afternoon.”
What would you do if you found a beautiful white horse on the shores of a loch? Would you clamber on for a ride? Or would you be suspicious of its wet footprints on the grass? Flora is suspicious, but can she work out the kelpie’s secret in time to save her brothers and sister from the monster from the loch?

This is my retelling of the magical and terrifying story of the kelpie, stunningly illustrated by Philip Longson.

Kelpies are Scotland’s most famous shapeshifters – monsters under the water, horses on the shore – and in old Scottish tales, they dragged children under the water to drown and devour them. Yes, this is a picture book, but not for very small people!

If you want to find your own kelpie, why not check out the amazing kelpie map my publishers Floris Books created (from my kelpie research!) showing lots of kelpie story locations round Scotland, with little snippets of the stories.  Careful – there might be a kelpie near you!
