Breaking the Spell

“A long time ago, the most dangerous place in Scotland wasn’t the border or the mountains or the cliffs. The most dangerous place in Scotland was the edge of the forest…”

Breaking the Spell is a collection of my favourite Scottish stories, containing magic and monsters, heroines and heroes, selkies and kelpies, burning forests and shaking mountains…

I’ve chosen stories from all over Scotland, from Orkney in the north to the Borders in the south. I’ve tried to choose stories you might know, like Whuppity Stoorie, and stories I’m sure you’ve never heard before, but which I hope might become your favourite stories soon! And there is also my favourite story of all, the title story: Breaking the Spell, The story of Tam Linn. A story that I love so much I named my cat Tam Linn, and a story that has inspired quite a few of the magical adventures I write.

These ten tales have been brought to life by Cate James’s wonderful pictures (the only illustrator of any of my books that I’ve actually met, and she’s lovely!) I’m delighted to be able to share my favourite Scottish stories with you, and I’d love to hear which stories you already knew and which are new discoveries for you!
